Athletes for Sexual Responsibilities
Last Monday on the 22nd of March, the student-athletes that are in the A-S-R program which stands for Athletes for Sexual Responsibilities. The meeting was about how we can further educate students on campus about safe sex and other issues that are related to sex. We sometimes perform skits in dorms on campus and in the meeting last monday, we came split up into different groups to come up with different skits to perform. The program provides posters containing different sports and using it in a metaphor to relate it to safe sex. For example, on the basketball poster it reads, "When playing basketball you need good one-on-one defense.... Wear a condom." It is catchy and it sends a message about you and your partner about safer sex. These posters are very popular along with the bumper stickers that are offered. The stickers that the program provides are black and white and has a condom on it that reads, "Just Wear It." I have hosted a table in the union that has a bunch of the posters, stickers, candy, a few shirts, and little pamphlets of facts about sexual related issues that go happen on college campuses. Most people that walk past stop at the table and take what is being offered to them and it shows that the program is doing what it intended on doing which was to spread the word about safer sex and protecting yourself and your partner. There is another program similar to this one which is called M-A-A-V; it stands for Male Athletes Against Violence, I happened to be a part of that program last year and we did some of the same activities that A-S-R does. These programs will be out for a years to come and as technology gets better and there are more ways to get this program going in the right direction, then the program has done it's job. I enjoy every time we meet being able to come up with ideas to further educate other college students on issues involving sex.
